The Genesis version was later digitally re-released for the Wii (via Virtual Console) on Ap(and was later de-listed on January 1, 2014). It was later ported to the Game Boy Advance in 2001 by Pipe Dream, released by Majesco in North America on June 10 and Interplay in Europe on September 21. The Genesis version was later released in South America by Tec Toy sometime in 1997. The SNES version was also released in Japan by Pony Canyon on July 1995 as PITFALL: Maya no Daibouken (loosely translated to 'Pitfall: The Adventures of Maya'). The Jaguar version is unique as it is the last Activision game released for an Atari console and is the only game to be co-published with Atari themselves). The game was later ported in 1995 to the Sega CD, the Sega 32X (by Big Bang and Zombie Virtual Reality Entertainment), the Atari Jaguar (by Imagitec and co-published by Atari), and the PC (by Kinesoft). It also contains numerous references to the original game, including a playable version as a hidden easter egg. The game is known for its smooth animation (as one of the final projects of animation studio Kroyer Films, best known for the 1992 film FernGully: The Last Rainforest) and soundtrack by Soundelux Media Labs. It was then ported again twice over for the Mega CD and the 32X add-ons. Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure, on the other hand, was originally created for the SNES in 1991 but made its way over to the Sega Genesis a few years later. Oddly enough neither ended up on the Master System. The series was revived on the SNES and Sega Genesis in 1994s Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure, a platformer in the same vein as Aladdin and Earthworm Jim.
